Ravenna decides to delve into Rowan McNabb’s past to look into his details since he rubs elbows with Arcangels. She learns:
- Red Feather is Rowan McNabb the butcher of Chakagari
- Red Feather got his name by the pattern arterial blood makes in the snow
- When the Imperial Bounty Progam halted, Red Feather continues the slaughter of the native tribes of North Brilend anyway. His band is eventually caught by Rangers from the Jewell Cities and is sentenced to the mines of Opal.
- The memories skip to Rowan McNabb living in Tothkubad. He lives life of debauch under the Arcangul Daiocni whose association gives McNabb a serious reputation among Tothkubad’s inhabitants.
- McNabb discovers the infiltration of Arlaina Darkmoon and captures her. Daiocni gives her to him and together with the demon Zalgroth begin to torture and abuse her.
- Through Rowan McNabb’s eyes, Ravenna gleans the identity of some of the Archanguls:
- Daiocni – He is a handsome fiend in finely tailored clothes, black skin, black horns and manicured hands with black nails.
- Pale Night – It appears in a shimmer of strange light, as a diaphanous, white sheet that billows in a non-existent wind, yet never enough to reveal what lurks beneath. The contours of the robe suggest a comely, feminine form, like that of a lithe elf or human. The phantasmal figure glides through the air, hazy and terrifying yet seductive in shape.
- The Faceless One – a humanoid figure mummified in tattered cloth from head to toe
- Obsidian Statue – an androgynous humanoid animated statue of some kind of black stone
- Marchosias – a giant she-wolf with leather wings and a serpents tail

Logan Danbury – A merchant representing “a consortium of merchants from Edmonds Crossing” arrives in town looking for Mar’Khabazza. He is interested in an alliance that will commit to purchasing a fixed amount of cargo from the Salt House and in return the Salt House will provide that cargo at a reduced rate. Danbury gets a steady supply of ore and steel and the Salt House gets a committed buyer.

Logan arrives in Beryl to inspect the opertation there. Meets with Mar’Khabazza to strike a deal with him about trading. He represents a “consortium” of merchants in Edmonds Crossing. MK wants to meet them, using Ravenna’s teleport spell to get them there quickly.
Ravenna continues her meditations on Rowan McNabb’s background:
- Rowan McNabb meets Daiocni for the first time. They have long discussions about the independence of humankind and free will. Rowan resents Daiocni even as he is seduced by him, having sex with him when he changes form. Arlaina and the demon Zalgroth also participate.
- Rowan McNabb, freshly emancipated from the mines, is shunned by everyone in Opal except for a few miners who know him as a hard worker who keeps to himself. He decides to head back to Edmonds Crossing and is captured by winter elves along the stretch in the unnamed forest south of the river valley. He is brought to the grey stone where Daiocni is managing the sudaar and the mines. Daiocni transports him to Calithil.
- Rowan McNabb is born two two red-haired caravaners on the great road from the south to Edmonds Crossing. They make the route from the heart of the Khazdushiz Empire to Edmonds crossing once a year. When Rowan is in his teens his convoy is savaged by Chakagari and he vows revenge against any and all tribesmen. He is taken in by a mercenary band who slaughters Chakagari.
- Rowan McNabb witnesses an argument in a ruined tower (the remains of the Spire of Erebo – in the city of knowledge) between Daiocni and Pale Night. Daiocni is enamored by the power of human agency. Pale Night thinks he is a fool.
- None of the 13 Arcanguls know where Az is imprisoned with the death spark. Az’ prison is in the void. Daicni and Pale Night do not want humans destroyed.
