The Troupe arrive in Opal after an uneventful trip south from Beryl, having discovered some Winter Elf research notes that itself was based on some Duergar and human tomes that delve into the nature of earthnodes and the manipulation of the arcane forces found therein. Ravenna delivers books to library, hoping to capitalize on the Library’s ability to instantly ingest the knowledge contained in any book brought into it for the holder of the Knowledge Spark.

Magnus pays a visit to Lady Catriona and the two of them have a tryst in her bedroom. After they finsh they discuss matters of business and she gives him a letter of credit for 14,000 to be given to Mar’Khabazza. At this point, Mar’Khabazza’s 13,000 silver initial investment as resulted in 20,000 in income. With the arrival of the letter of credit, Mar’Khabazza goes gambling at Tempest.
June 18, 7762
Hoping to craft laen weapons by hand instead of magically, Ravenna begins to study blacksmithing and spends her days locked up in her tower, visited occasionally by Savenia Loresong.
June 19, 7762
Catriona delivers another letter for 4,000 silver and the investment is now up eleven thousand. This day also marks the day that a merchant brings cannons to sell to Opal. This is the result of Ravenna using the Knowledge Spark to have someone invent cannon to aid in the defense of the Jewell cities against the winter elf incursions. With the cannon comes news that cannon are now being used in the civil war to brutal effect, accelerating the massacres. At this point, Joktuk and the city watch gear up for next era: riflemen are brought into the guard.
Ravenna hires a duergar to build a cold forge.
The Salt House receives an invitation to House Rin’ji for a going away banquet, indicating that House Rin’ji will be leaving Opal. Magnus’ urchins confirm that House Rin’ji has begin moving furniture into wagons.
June 24, 7762
Under the auspices of a going away party that Mar’Khabazza dubs the “popsicle party”, House Rin’ji has invited the Opal council members, plus the Salt House, leadership from House Bates, House Indi, House Terilaen, Clan Maerklos, House Maldor and House Tesper for a formal meal.
During the dinner, crossbowmen appear in the rafters and ambush the guests and the following leaders are killed:

With Trueheart, Dathrohan and Ardala Terilaen gravely wounded. During the ensuing battle in the Rin’ji dining room, Magnus kills Rin’ji but Mar’Khabazza takes the credit.

during the next several days of healing and recouperating, the Opal Council meets in city hall and name Mar’Khabazza “Protector of Opal” and give him the edict to go hunt down the enemies of Opal and solve the various mysteries within the town.
